Volvo vehicles may refuse to start. If your Volvo won't start, don't panic. Take a look at several tips that will help you start your Volvo again or help you narrow down the problem. Immobilizer See manual error message on the dashboard means your Volvo is not recognizing the key and therefore it will not allow you to start the engine. The problem could be caused by a number of issues, including a bad key, defective ignition or faulty CEM Module.
If you are stranded in a parking lot, try these tips as in most cases one of them will help you start your Volvo. While sitting in the car press the keyfob lock and unlock buttons five times.
Now try to start your Volvo. If the first tip didn't work, get out of the car. Lock the car. Press the Panic button on the key fob and alarm will go off.
Press the unlock button. Enter the car and start the engine. Turn the key to position II then off five times. On the sixth try, try to start the engine. Let's take a look at some of the most common problems that prevent a Volvo from starting and trigger Immobilizer error messages.
If your Volvo won't startand you are getting an Immobilizer message plus your Volvo is acting strangely and is displaying several random messages such as ABS, Airbag, Steering failure chances are that the Central Electronic Module CEM module is the culprit. These units are known to fail. Another possibility is that one of the wire harnesses to the CEM module is loose. You can verify this by making sure that the wire harnesses to the CEM under the dashboard are not loose. Your Volvo key is not being recognized.
This could be due to an issue with the immobilizer, or a key that is damaged. The slot where you insert your Volvo key has a ring. Inside that, there is a wire loop that serves as the antenna. When the antenna fails, your Volvo key will no longer be recognized when inserted into the ignition. The car battery is partially discharged in which case there is not enough charge to power up all the modules. This is often the case when the dashboard lights turn on but you can't start the engine. You can use a Battery Charger to charge your Volvo battery or to get back on the road jump-start your Volvo.
The part is expensive and it also needs to be programmed by the dealer. I'm having an issue getting my xc70 to crank the key turns lights come on but it does nothing.

Post 1. Had our cross country towed last night for the third time in a month. Keep getting an immobilizer alert on the message board. Our service dept at the dealer did replace the antenna ring once but the problem occured again. Got the car back after the second repair and all seemed well but within 4 days the car failed again. Any thoughts???

Sep 6PM. Post 3. Hi buffalo- I am new here and looking for the same answers! I've totally stopped driving our xc after three strandings because of the immobiliser. Luckily we have a "spare"; our "hauling" car- an old that I am driving everywhere. My husband keeps trying with the xc he must be more optimistic than I am and he is stranded yet again today.
It is the second time in two weeks. The dealer keeps telling us to wait five hours then it will start. As if this is a good option while standing in a parking lot somewhere It happens with all the keys; we've had the ring replaced Maybe more people will chime in with success stories.
It only takes a minute to sign up. That didn't work either. One answer is simply to wait - according to the manual, after 5 hours the immobilizer will reset, and in fact the next morning the car started fine.
I took it into a independent Volvo shop today, and was told that the connection on the antenna ring sometimes goes bad, but the ring itself rarely needs to be replaced - taking off the connector and spraying with contact cleaner is all it needs.

My Volvo S40 06 would not start when I turned the ignition key. I got a message that was somewhat like "Key Error, please try again". I tried with both my keys so it wasn't the key itself.
I think I could hear some relay clicking in the on position. I had the same error about a week earlier but then it worked after a few tries and I didn't think more of it, but this time it would not work.
I called the Volvo assistance and the guy they sent put the key into the ignition, turned it fully on and hit it relatively hard about ten times with the handle of a screwdriver, then he turned it to the off position and repeated the procedure.
The car then started. He said that he had fixed this problem on a few Volvos and they seemed to continue working after this, but he could not guarantee anything. I am not a mechanic obviously so I wonder if someone knows what this error could be. Is it just oxidized connectors or is it a symptom of some bigger problem? What can I do about it? I recently had a similar problem where I got intermittent "Immobilizer" messages. It's a relatively simple job to get to and clean the connector, which might be good preventative maintenance.
Other possibilities: You could have a bad relay. There's a fusebox under the hood, and one of the relays R13 is for the starter. You should be able to remove the relay, and jumper the connection to determine whether or not the relay is the problem. You can get the wiring diagram for the car here. If you had given that description without the screwdriver part, it would sound to me like your car is one of those that has a chip in the key where not just any key matching the physical cut will work, it has to be in combination with the car reading the chip.Welcome Guest Log In Register.

Hi, I have a V50 T5 I had an opposite issue as yours. My key refused to come out from the ignition lock and a message got displayed saying something like "Immobiliser enabled. Check manual. The car was driving fine, I could start and stop the engine, however, the key was not coming out.
I drove to the dealer where they changed the ignition lock. I didn't have any issues since Aug 8AM. Post 3. Today I had the exact same problem as you benedict.
The steering locked and the car would not start. The V50 is just two months old and is already back at the workshop! The towtruck drivers who picked the car up said they had seen another V50 with the same problem just one week ago. Meanwhile the dealership service guys claimed they'd never seen this issue before.

You either have an issue with the immobilizer system or a problem with the battery. If the battery is low then there will not be enough voltage available in the car to deactivate the immobilizer system and start the vehicle. If the battery is fine then I would try an extra key. If the extra key does not work then the immobilizer system needs to be reprogrammed to see if it is a programming issue.
It can possibly be a bad module, but that is not as common. My s40 t5 had a dead battery that wouldn't hold a charge so I replaced it. With the new battery installed, the lights, ventilation, radio all work but the car won't start. I get a message on the display saying "immobilizer I've tried locking and unlocking the car five times. Does anybody have any ideas? There was no battery in the car for a couple of days so I'm thinking that a code needs to be reset but the dealer is very far away for the car to be towed.
